Pandemic is a global disease outbreak. A pandemic event occurs when a new influenza virus emerges for which there is little or no immunity in the human population, begins to cause serious illness and then spreads easily person-to-person worldwide. A worldwide influenza pandemic could have a major effect on the global economy, including travel, trade, tourism, food, consumption and eventually, investment and financial markets. In the event of pandemic influenza, businesses will play a key role in protecting employees’ health and safety as well as limiting the negative impact to the economy and society. Planning for a pandemic is critical. Pandemic Checklists and Policies identify important, specific activities small and large businesses can do now to prepare, many of which will also help you in other emergencies.

To reduce the impact of a pandemic on your operations, employees, customers, and the general public, it is important for all businesses and organizations to begin continuity planning for a pandemic now. Lack of continuity planning can result in a cascade of failures as employers attempt to address challenges of a pandemic with insufficient resources and employees who might not be adequately trained in the jobs they will be asked to perform. Dennis A. Terpin, PhD, O.H.S.T. Retired Senior Industrial Hygienist and Emergency Manager for the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Terpin is a member of the retired Z88, and Z88.10 and the new ASTM International Technical Committee F23.65 on Personal Protective Clothing and Respiratory Protection/Equipment. Dennis is a Certified Master Level Instructor for FEMA/Department of Homeland Security teaching at the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) CORBRA live agent training center instructing in respiratory protection. Dennis has over 50 years of experience in the Occupational Safety and Health, Laboratory Safety and Emergency Management fields. Dennis has presented over 25 Professional Development Courses in-house and at major Safety Conferences since his retirement.
