The P’s and Q’s of the HAZWOPER Standard

This program exceeds the mandatory 8 – Hour REFRESHER training requirements under OSHA 1910.120(p)(8)(iii)(A), (and 1910.120(q)(6) HAZWOPER.

Course Description:

This standard applies to five distinct groups of employers and their employees, including those exposed or potentially exposed to hazardous substances and engaged in one of the following operations as specified by 1910.120(a)(1)(i-v) and 1926.65(a)(1)(i-v):

• Clean-up operations required by a governmental body, whether federal, state, local, or other involving hazardous substances that are conducted at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
• Corrective actions involving clean-up operations at sites covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA) as amended (42 U.S.C. 6901 et seq.)
• Voluntary clean-up operations at sites recognized by federal, state, local, or other governmental body as uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
• Operations involving hazardous wastes that are conducted at treatment, storage, and disposal facilities regulated by Title 40 Code of Federal Regulations Parts 264 and 265 pursuant to RCRA, or by agencies under agreement with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to implement RCRA regulations
• Emergency response operations for releases of, or substantial threats of releases of, hazardous substances regardless of the location of the hazard. First responders at the First receivers, operations, technician and ICS levels.

This program exceeds the 29 CFR 1910.120 (HAZWOPER) refresher training requirements. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standard applies to employers and employees who may be exposed to hazardous waste during routine handling, treatment, disposal, cleanup, remediation. Emergency Response to hazardous materials/ CBRNE incidents, (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives), First Receivers, First Responders and Incident Command Teams.

Specific Topics:

This program will discuss in detail all the components of the HAZWOPER standard. To include: What is the application of HAZWOPER standard to clean-up, storage, emergency response operations, hospital decontamination teams, training requirements, chemical and physical hazard recognition, PPE requirements, respiratory protection, corrective actions, voluntary clean-up operations, atmospheric monitoring, construction, Incident Command Teams and confined space entries /rescue members

Your Instructor: – Dennis Terpin – ASSE Hawaii Local Chapter Member

Dr. Terpin is the Senior Industrial Hygienist, Hazardous Waste Superviser/Emergency Manager for the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dennis a Certified Fire Officer, HazMat Specialist/EMT instructor, Certified Master Level Instructor for FEMA/Department of Homeland Security at the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) assigned to the HazMat Chemical, Ordinance, Biological and Radiological Live Agent Training Facility (COBRATF). Dr. Terpin also is an instructor for the FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute. Dennis is a member of the ASTM F23 International PPE and Respiratory committee. As the University’s Certified All Hazards Safety Officer, he worked such events as President Obama’s visit to UIC, Senate Bill 10 in Illinois, the 12th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates Conference, the 2012 Chicago NATO Conference and the 2016 UIC Trump Rally.
